With bikini season right around the corner, I had to make something healthy with a ripened avocado before it went bad. Instead of making a quesadilla or nachos topped with guacamole, I decided to go the sweet route. I made a creamy Ovaltine and Avocado Smoothie. Ovaltine is a healthy chocolate malt powder loaded with vitamins and minerals. I have fond memories of visiting my maternal grandmother in the Philippines–she always had Ovaltine on hand to make chocolate milk or hot cocoa.
While growing up in California, I watched my parents put sugar on their avocados, which I thought was odd. I later discovered many cultures in other parts of the world use avocado as a sweet treat, rather than savory as we do in the states. I’ve seen avocados used in smoothies, as they add a natural creamy texture. Avocados are high in Vitamin E, and have several health benefits.
This is unlikely combination of Ovaltine and avocado makes a simple, nutritious, and quick recipe that includes also almond milk, agave as a sweetner, and ice. Ovaltine has the chocolate flavor, but lacks in sweetness. You can try other forms of cocoa or protein powders using this recipe as a base, but may have to adjust the amount of cocoa and agave you add to the mixture. I tested a few batches with natural cocoa, but liked the taste best with Ovaltine.
